MCD justifies hike in cellphone tower fee
NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has said that the hike in the installation fee to set up cellphone towers in the city was justified, keeping the inflation in mind. The civic body said it had not increased the fee for the past eight years and cellphone operators had been paying merely Rs 1 lakh.
"There has been an increase in the fee structure of many things. So why can't we increase the installation fee? We are providing cellular companies with other services in return. MCD is the competent body under Section 150 of Delhi Municipal Act to increase the fees. We have formulated a new policy for erecting cellular towers as per law," said a senior MCD official.
The MCD had on February 9 introduced a new policy on mobile towers. The amount payable by service providers to MCD for installing a tower has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Many operators had approached the court, which will decide the matter on Wednesday.
